Introduction
Various ethnic groups influence life in the United States. One way that influence is seen is through music. Music is a basic social and cultural activity. The border region between Texas and Mexico has given rise to a unique Tex-Mex culture. Tejano music is one type of music that remains popular in the San Antonio area and throughout other areas of the U.S. All music is a form of communication where sounds are put together to create a unique musical piece. The greatest enjoyment of music comes with the greatest understanding.


The Task
Radio is a primary entertainment source for many people. With that in mind, you will be working in groups of 3 or 4 students to prepare a radio program. Each group will be preparing a program for a different San Antonio, Texas, radio station but all of them will be featuring a Tejano music format so you will be competing for the same listening audience. Each of you will be playing an assigned role as you develop a script and record your program on an audio cassette tape. All members of the group are expected to contribute equally. The DJ will act as leader of the group.

Establish Groups

1. You will be assigned to a group of 3 or 4 persons with each person being assigned a specific role as defined above.

2. As a group decide on your station’s call letters (for example, KSAH).

3. Conduct Research
Description of Tejano music, its “roots”, famous musicians. Find your role’s task below and then use the following web sites and guiding questions to guide you as you do your research.


Task

DJ: Your radio program is going to air the week before the annual Tejano music awards show in San Antonio. You are to research and prepare a simple description in Spanish of Tejano music for the lead-in.



Tejano Musician: A local newspaper is featuring Tejano music and has asked you to prepare a written description in Spanish of the kind of music you play.



Hispanic Listener: A friend in Iowa who is studying Spanish has asked you to explain what Tejano music is. You have to answer back with a letter in Spanish explaining the characteristics of this style of music.



Organizer: You are promoting the upcoming awards show in San Antonio and trying to create interest in Tejano music. You are to research and prepare a description in Spanish of Tejano music for use in your promotional materials and interviews.

Find your role’s task below and then use the following web sites and guiding questions to guide you as you do your research.


Task

DJ: As a DJ, you need to find out who your Hispanic audience is so you can play music and conduct interviews or contests which will be interesting to them. You are to research and prepare a chart on the characteristics of Hispanics in San Antonio. Once you have completed the chart, compose six trivial facts that you can use to stump your audience in a contest. Provide the questions and the answers in Spanish.



Tejano Musician: You have been asked to perform at a local teen dance club in San Antonio and for a relative’s wedding (your cousin is mid-40’s). You need to select songs for both audiences. In order to know your possible audiences in San Antonio, prepare a chart on the characteristics of Hispanics there. After completing the chart in Spanish, list five songs you would sing and the costume you would wear for each concert. Write this in Spanish.



Hispanic Listener: You've been asked to be a special guest writer for the HISPANIC magazine. Give a description in Spanish of the characteristics of the Hispanics in this listening area. Be sure to indicate which demographic group is the largest.



Organizer: You are preparing for the Tejano music award show. You are to research and prepare a chart on the characteristics of Hispanics in San Antonio. Once you have completed this chart, compose 6 trivial facts to share with the audience about the Hispanics in San Antonio. Sentences will begin with “Sabes que . . . ?”

Find your role’s task below and then use the following web sites and guiding questions to guide you as you do your research.


Task
DJ: You are to decide what you want to feature on your radio show. You want to include something that will make listeners stay tuned to your station. You are to research existing radio stations in San Antonio and find out what they include. Once you have completed the research, make a list of the different segments you'd like to include. Do this in Spanish.

Tejano Musician: You want your music to get as much on-air time as possible so you want to find out which stations might consider playing your songs. You are to research the existing radio stations in San Antonio and find out which ones have a Spanish or Tejano format. Once you have completed the research, make a list of the San Antonio radio stations you'd like to contact.

Hispanic Listener: You want to tune in to a Tejano music station but don't know which ones are available in San Antonio. You are to research the existing radio stations in San Antonio and find out which ones have a Spanish or Tejano music format. Once you have completed the research, make a list of the San Antonio radio stations you'd like to program on your radio.

Organizer: You are preparing the advertising for the Tejano music award show. You would like to contact every radio station that plays Tejano music in the San Antonio area. You are to research the existing radio stations in San Antonio and find out which ones have a Spanish or Tejano music format. Once you have completed the research, make a list of the San Antonio radio stations you'd like to convince to promote your show.

Find your role’s task below and then use the following web sites and guiding questions to guide you as you do your research.


Tasks
DJ: Research the categories and nominees for the TTMA and/or TEMA Tejano music award shows. List the top 10 songs you'd play on your radio program based on that information. Also select a musical guest on your show who might be on the awards show. Prepare 3 questions you'd like to ask him/her during the radio show. Prepare 6 trivial facts in Spanish about this musician to use for a call-in contest for the listeners.

Tejano Musician: You would like to be nominated for a Tejano music award. Make a list of all the categories there are. Make a list of the awards you'd like to win. Include who the nominees are for these awards this year. Do this in Spanish.

Hispanic Listener: Research the categories and nominees for this year’s award show. Predict who will win the best Tejano music song or album categories. Use this list to prepare your call-in song request in Spanish.

Organizer: Research the categories and nominees for this year’s award show. Make a list of which songs and which musicians you'd like to feature on this year’s show and on area Tejano music radio stations. Try to include a sentence in Spanish about your plans.

Write script and present (live/taped) your radio program.
7. Once you have done all the research and completed the 4 tasks assigned to your role, get together with your group members and discuss your findings. Share ideas on what to include from your research in the taped radio program.

8. After you are agreed upon the program outline, write your interview or part. Then put the parts together and revise. A final copy should be written and turned in prior to taping. Use as much Spanish as possible, especially for the interviews and conversations. Use only the tenses that we have studied in class up to this point. Try to include at least 3 exchanges of information in each segment to increase our knowledge of Tejano music.

9. Rehearse your program. Be expressive as you play your role in Spanish.

10. Record your radio program on cassette tape either prior to class or during a “live” presentation in class.

 

Assessment
A rubric will be used to evaluate this project. You will each receive an individual and group grade.

You will be graded individually on the completion of the 4 tasks based on the Internet research that were assigned to your role . You will also be graded individually on your use of class time, your written part of the script, and your speaking during the presentation.

You will receive a group grade for your shared involvement and presentation of the show and its content.


Conclusion
Music allows us to make connections with people from other cultures and with each other. The Hispanic influence is seen in many places in our country. An understanding of this impact in the music area may better ease racial/ethnic tensions in our country as well as provide a new type of musical entertainment for you.
